My journey into the world of occupational therapy began at Summit School, where I discovered the fundamentals of sensory integration while working with children with autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, and various other challenges. This experience ignited a passion in me for understanding the unique needs of neurodiverse children.
However, when faced with the complex medical challenges of one of my own children, I made the difficult decision to leave Summit School. I opened my own OT clinic, where I had the privilege of working closely with parents, grandparents, and siblings. Through these connections, I gained profound insights into how illness and disability impact entire families.
In 2013, as my children entered school, I felt it was time for a new adventure. I joined the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay Quebec, working with Indigenous communities. This experience has been transformative, allowing me to learn about complex trauma, mental health, and disabilities in a rich cultural context. I traveled to nine communities, sharing my knowledge about sensory integration and its vital role in supporting well-being.
During my sensory talks, I was often approached by individuals eager to share their personal stories of disability, pain, mental health struggles, and trauma. They showed me that the sensory tools and strategies I was discussing for children applied universally to people of all ages. I came to realize that sensory experiences connect us all.
Since then, I have spoken on a range of topics, including sensory ergonomics, sensory integration in the classroom, sensory considerations for behavior management, sensory-safe dental practices, and the role of sensory in dementia care. I emphasize that understanding sensory processing is essential not just for children, but also for caregivers, teachers, and therapists. Our own sensory experiences profoundly influence how we support those we work with.
Now, I feel a strong calling to return to my roots and share this message with the Montreal communities I grew up in. My goal is to foster a deeper understanding of sensory connections, helping us all navigate the complexities of life with compassion and insight.
